Review on The Graduate

The Graduate, a drama film directed by Mike Nichols, centers on a college graduate's journey of discovery and mistakes. Benjamin (the student) returns home after graduating from college and is festered from friends and family about what lies in his future. However, like many students, he has no idea of what the future stores for him.

During Ben's weak state, he becomes entranced and manipulated by Mrs. Robinson, his father's friend's wife. They begin a physical affair and Ben becomes interested in understanding why she is how she is. During their affair scenes, Nichols presented us with a movie effect such as the one where Ben is at the pool and then sleeping with Mrs. Robinson in the next scene. Then later on after going on a date with Mrs. Robinson's daughter, Elaine, Ben realizes his mistake. Then he chases after Elaine when she flees knowing he had an affair with her mom. In the end, Ben makes another mistake when escaping with Elaine. I did not like the character, Ben, and his journey throughout the film. I hoped that he would grow up or at least understand his mistakes, however he kept making more and more.

Nevertheless, the best scene is when his parents forced him to wear a diving suit and made him try it out in the pool in front of their friends. When Ben tries to leave the pool, his father literally pushes him under the water. This scene represents how his parents are suffocating him.
