Review on Some Like It Hot
This film did not disappoint. It was hilarious just like Charlie Chaplin's City Lights. This was my first Marilyn Monroe film and I think she played her character well. I thought that the film would be about crime since that's how the story started with a shootout between some gangsters and the police. However, after the two main characters, Joe and Jerry disguised themselves as women to get away from Chicago, and met Monroe, everything changed. They called themselves Josephine and Daphne and joined an all-female band headed to Miami. From this point on, it seemed like the plot was focused on whether or not the boys would be discovered and if either one would get the girl, Sugar Kane.
The two jazz players (saxophone and double-bass player) encounter hilarious encounters with the girls and Sugar Kane, for instance the private party that they all had on their way to Florida. Similar but not quite the same to White Chicks, no one seems to be able to tell that these two manly-looking men are disguised as women throughout the film. Part of the reason why this film is funny besides the obvious funny scenes, is the dialogue that they chose. Most of the funny lines are funny because they have double meanings, one that is not funny while the other is sex-related. After meeting Sugar Kane (Monroe), I suspected that one of the boys would fall for her.
This film also focuses on the vulnerability of women during the 1950s and their craftiness towards men. We witness this, firsthand when learning about Sugar Kane's past and watching her act towards Junior. She says she always falls for the saxophone players that end up using her and leaving her with nothing. However, when meeting Junior, she lies about her past, her background and her current profession. Her clothing is also very provocative and allows her to flaunt her body while seeming naive.
At the beginning of the film, we learn that Joe is a player who uses people, especially for their money. Even when "dating" Sugar as Junior, he says that he is planning on leaving her in the end. However, somehow by seeing the world from the point of view of a woman, Joe does his first un-selfish when he leaves Sugar with the diamond bracelet that he and Jerry were planning to live off from.
