Review on Tsotsi

This film was very emotional and had a coming-of-age storyline. Tsotsi, formally known as David, lives as a gang leader with three followers: Butcher, Aap and Boston. Having had a traumatic childhood with his mother dying and having an abusive father, Tsotsi grows up to become a selfish man who only values his life. After getting into a fight with one of his followers/friends, he shoots a young woman and steals her car. However, Tsotsi later finds out is that there is a three-month baby in the back seat.

At first, Tsotsi lets us believe that he will simply strip the car of its valuables and leave the baby behind. However, he ends up taking the baby with him to his shack/home. The mother's child survives, and she is searching for her son with the accompany of the police. She gives them a composite sketch of Tsotsi's face and his face is in the news. After this, Tsotsi tries his best to keep the baby happy and fed. It's surprising that a character that seems so out of touch with the world around him could care for a stranger's child like his own. At this point, Tsotsi's character is metamorphosing into a caring and responsible individual. When he is caught, instead of thinking of himself and using the baby as a tool for ransom, he says his parting words and returns the baby.

Tsotsi in the end grows up as an individual and I believe that the baby was able to warm Tsotsi's frozen heart. Tsotsi grows to love the baby as his brother and he sacrifices his own happiness or freedom to return him to a safer and warmer environment. Tsotsi experiences love for the first time since his mother died, and his development into a kind person was admiring.
